A recent study in Austin reported that 22% of homeowners who filed their own protest in 2009 achieved taxable value reductions; 78% did not. Their average reduction was 3.3% of value.
This compares with 79.7% success rate for homeowners who were represented by a property tax consultant. Their average reduction was 8.03%.The study was limited to properties valued over $1,000,000.
The discrepancy between properties represented by their owner and those represented by a consultant would most likely be even more dramatic if values under $1,000,000 were included.
